Seacrh Engines Are Free

The way for a contractor, or anyone for that matter, to advertise online for free is to rank highly within search engine searches. In other words, when someone performs a search on Google for, say, "hail damage minnesota contractor," and you are a contractor that performs this type of work in that state, you would hope that your website would show up within the search results.

However, many contractors are not being listed for search results that they should be listed for. This is because the contractor's website is stagnant, lacks content and probably is not much more than an "about me" site. These types of sites usually do not perform very well when it comes to search engine results.

An "about me" site may suffice for your contracting business if the site's only purpose is to allow existing or potential customers to type in your URL and read a little about your company. But, if you actually want your site to be found organically through relevant online searches, your website needs to create a reason to make this happen. This "reason" will be content.

You need to add valuable and unique content to your site that people will find interesting or captivating such that the visitor will click around your site and stay on your site for an extended period of time. If the visitor then bookmarks your site, subscribes to your blog, leaves a comment, all the better. But initially, quality traffic is what you want.

Speaking of blogging, this is the way you should add this content to your website. Everybody is blogging these days. Part of the blog explosion is simply the freedom and availability of the medium. Practically anyone with internet access can blog. But a huge factor for the blog machine growth is the fact that blogging is simply the best way to add content to your site that is also search engine friendly.

Every blog you write is simply an article. It can be an article about almost anything pertaining to your trade(s). You could post a blog about the proper way to install a roof or what hail damage to aluminum siding looks like. You could create a post for every job you perform with integrated videos and pictures of the projects. A blog allows you to really connect with your customers much more easily than just having the standard static and boring site.

Your site does not have to have flashy graphics. It simply needs to be updated on a consistent basis with high quality and relevant content. A good goal, depending on your time, may be to post a blog every other day. This forces you to add content to your site. You will start to get creative in how you add different elements of your blog. You can start to link the more relevant content to itself. You will find that simply by blogging, you will be implementing keywords effortlessly and naturally. Still, an extra keyword effort doesn't hurt.

For example, if you are a contractor that performs roofing work in southeastern Ohio, you may want to compose blogs about that region's specific roofing situations. This would allow you to implement the keywords of "ohio," and "roofing." You could also incorporate specific towns where you work or, better yet, where you want to work. You want to blog about topics that will bring forth the type of traffic that will turn into customers.

Be Unique

Think From Your Customers' Perspective

Having said that, it's still important to remember that almost all traffic is good traffic. So, even if some people visit your site, gain some knowledge and then click away, this traffic still helps you achieve other traffic in the future and, as long as you continue to blog valuable and unique relevant content, this traffic should only increase over time.

Also, don't get discouraged. Your site may never rank highly for a search as broad as something like "cheap siding." But, this isn't necessarily what you want anyway. What you want is to show up in search results for a search like "siding contractor wind damage dallas texas." You can make the latter happen sooner than you think. But, you better start blogging.

Another way to advertise for free is to add your portfolio of work to sites like buildlens.com and pinterest.com
